Kaolin clay

INCI: Kaolin

Overview

White clay, also called kaolin, is rich in silica. Its name comes from the Chinese town of Kao-Ling (land of high hills), where it was discovered. The virtues of white clay are numerous and its multiple applications, making it an essential ingredient for your cosmetic preparations. It is ideal for preparing masks and purifying and sanitizing care for dry and delicate skin.

White clay is a natural mineral of the family of phylosillicates (such as talc and micas). It is composed of hydrated aluminum silicate, its white color comes from its high percentage of alumina (about 23%), known for its repairing power. Its lamellar structure (in sheets) gives it very good covering properties .

>> Focus on absorption and adsorption:
Clays have the property of absorbing liquids such as water, filling a bit like a sponge.

Clays also have the ability to adsorb, ie to fix molecules on their surface . This ability to fix molecules comes from the fact that clays are negatively charged . The negative charge is explained by the presence of minerals (the more the clay is concentrated in mineral salts, the more it will be negatively charged ).

When the clay is in solution it will attract positive ions contrary to this solution and can exchange them once in contact with the skin. The clay will therefore participate in the remineralization and detoxification of the skin , by exchanging its mineral salts with toxins and impurities in the skin. This phenomenon allows the clay to convey assets and restore them to the skin.

The agile white is used as an ingredient in your preparations. Sedimentary clay derived from a medium leached by water on a perfectly drained ground, it is rich in silica and not very concentrated in mineral salts and is one of the least adsorbent and most hydrated clays. It is therefore used preferentially in preparations adapted to dry and sensitive skin .

White clay has been known and used for a very long time: Paleolithic healers already treated with clay and mud. Today white clay is used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries . It is also used in the manufacture of ceramics, paper, rubber and plastic.
